Kwiakah First Nation announces M̓ac̓inuxʷ Special Forest Management Area, Kwaxala Pilot Now Under Full Development

On 24th May our founding equity partner the Kwiakah First Nation made an exciting announcement regarding the establishment of the M̓ac̓inuxʷ Special Forest Management Area on their territory in British Columbia. You may have seen it in the news. It may not seem extraordinary at first glance, but this is no ordinary conservation project. The creation of the M̓ac̓inuxʷ Special Forest Management Area represents the transition from the right to extract as an economic asset to the right to regenerate as an economic asset and it is a significant milestone on a move towards representing living nature in our economic systems. It also represents the process of reconciliation and decolonisation because the right to regenerate is now being held by the recognised Indigenous land title holder, eliminating the previous threat of extraction on their territory, by a third party tenure holder, that was totally out of their control and for which they were never appropriately compensated.

For Kwaxala it is also a significant first step because this area represents the first 18,500 acres of our pilot project which can now be progressed and publicized. We are building an investment mechanism around this project that will enable forest investors to hold value in this revised relationship with both the land and the Kwiakah First Nation. This will release upfront capital for further regenerative development of the area and investors will receive a share of either profits resulting from carbon and ecocredit sales or, if preferred for corporate investors, a share of the offsets themselves. These returns are expected to grow in value steadily over the coming decades as the global economy financially recognises the need for the vital services a living forest offers humanity. This will give Kwaxala living forest investors an ethical and nature positive investment vehicle that should provide both asset appreciation and annual yields. Critically, the Kwaxala model is repeatable and equitable and is being developed for high speed large-scale deployment in other areas of British Columbia as well as other areas of at-risk forest globally.

If you would be interested in a pioneering direct investment in a Living Forest, we’d love to hear from you.
